Meet Samalie – Woman of the month

Samalie has just received her fourth loan from Umama. Through Umama, she was able to open a store where she sells beans, sugar, and other necessities – a much more stable income than her previous business as a curtain vendor. Recently, we spoke with Samalie and she could not stop saying how grateful she was for Umama because, apart from providing loans, Umama offered her the knowledge to run a business. She loves the program so much, she hopes her daughter will be able to join!

Meet Prossy – Woman of the month

This month, we are highlighting Prossy. An entrepreneurial mother working hard to provide for her family in Mukono, Uganda. Prossy sells women’s undergarments. Recognizing the demands of her customers, she wants to use her Umama loan to expand her business into women’s blouses. Umama, she says, encourages women to work hard and save for the future, and this is what she is doing. Currently, she sells her products door-to-door, but she hopes that future Umama loans will be able to help her set up a permanent storefront for her business.

Over the next few months, we want to start sharing these stories with you. Below is the first installment in a series of posts highlighting women that have been empowered by Umama. When Aisha joined Umama, she operated a small vegetable stand. She recognized that with the population increase in her village, there was more demand for certain items, but she lacked the capital to meet this demand. That’s where Umama came in. With her loans, she has been able to greatly increase the amount of vegetables she stocks in her store, and has also purchased charcoal to sell. And because Umama has lower interest rates and longer periods to pay back loans than other institutions, she says that these loans were much more accessible to her.
